It’s hard to believe the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver finished only two weeks ago. Olympic athletes Lindsey Vonn and Apolo Ohno have new TV commercials so we are reminded of who they are but the games as if have finished ages ago.
The Canadian women won the hockey tournament beating the American women in the finals. The Canadian men did the very same in the men’s Olympic hockey finals. Hockey certainly showed it is one of the most exciting Olympic sports.
Undeniably, Asian nations showed they are coming on strong. The Chinese women played in the hockey tournament, their men did not but it is only a little bit more of time before we’ll see they Chinese men playing hockey too. And looking at the figure skating results we already know they can skate, so they are bound to learn stick handling too.
Too bad that the mountain climbers can’t compete in the winter games. How about a race from Mount Everest base camp to the summit, that would be a great event and I am sure Nepal would get its first Olympic medal.
Canadians as a nation were ecstatic, and they should be. While the games were struck with an Olympic athlete’s death ever before the Opening Ceremony and Canadian athletes had a slow start, they ended up with 14 gold medals, most of all nations. US had only 9 gold though they did collect the most medals overall.
Its two more years to London summer Olympic Games. In the meantime, I am looking forward to Tour de France – how about little cycling for a change! Of course before that we will have Wimbledon in tennis and by then also Tiger Woods could come back – if he does we’ll have to endure probably a lot of golf. I sure hope he will be rehabilitated before he’ll tee off!
So it’s off to Sochi for the next Winter Olympic Games. The Russians gave us a preview at the Closing Ceremony in Vancouver. Impressive, just not sure what they were thinking when in one of those clips they showed us a glimpse of a socialistic realism statue of a man and a woman holding arms pointing up and forward, while the pedestal sported the proverbial Hammer and a Sickle! I thought that symbol was history, even in Russia?
